'Wait In The Water' Video
I was thinking about all the comments people have left for the video on youtube, and most of them are encouraging, but a few are not. Which is fine with me, you can't please everybody. The thing that really got me thinking was the comment which says "i was looking for that slave song but instead i found the whitest song ever" (FYI- there is an old slave hymn called 'WADE in the water')...and I get what he is saying because it is pretty country and all....I don't really take personal offense to it, It is just funny how "white" is used as an insult. We are talking about music here. I mean you have to refer to every racial stereotype in the book to even get what "white" or "black" music is, and yet we all pretty much get what it implies. Black music is soulful. White music is corny. I'm just kind of trippin' on how we can even refer to something like music as black or white. We don't say "that chair feels black" or "that meal tasted white" ... but somehow our sense of hearing is supposed to discern between different races. But then again, we do it all the time. I remember being really suprised to find out that "Groovin'" and "A Beautiful Mornin'" were sung by a white guy (Eddie Brigati of The Rascals).... cause he sounds so soulful. I'm sure there are college courses dedicated to this matter. Racism has kind of worked it's way into our everyday lives so much, we don't even notice it sometimes. We are a weird culture.

Happy Thanksgiving!
It's been a long day of mashing and whipping and seasoning and chopping and baking and boiling and broiling and cooking! I love this holiday because I love to eat and I really love to cook. As nice as it is to pause and give thanks, I try to do that throughout the year. It is important to keep perspective and not take all our blessings for granted. I don't, however, try to make 10 intricate dishes for my family throughout the year and quite honestly, that's what makes this day special for me. It's funny though, how an entire days work, and a week of planning, leads up to maybe one hour of feasting and then several hours of groaning. Happy Thanksgiving!
